Sydney’s newest hidden gem: whisky, cocktails, jazz and fine dining

6 September 2022

Sydney’s Wynyard Lane will soon be home to the Speakeasy Group’s most ambitious nighttime offering, bringing a moody speakeasy bar and new restaurant concept to Brookfield Place Sydney.

The group behind the wildly popular Viking-inspired Mjølner and Nick & Nora’s will re-establish its former Darlinghurst speakeasy cocktail bar, Eau-de-Vie, and also introduce The Sanderson, a brand-new restaurant concept.

The Sanderson will be located on the first floor of Beneficial House off Wynyard Lane, while the basement will welcome the return of Eau-de-Vie, the first venue opened by the group over a decade ago. During its tenure at its Darlinghurst location, Eau-de-Vie was ranked amongst the best cocktail bars in the world, including taking out World’s Best New Cocktail Bar.

Owned and operated by Sven Almenning and Greg Sanderson, The Speakeasy Group operates seven bars and restaurants across Sydney and Melbourne.

“Completely befitting the historical bones of Beneficial House, the new iteration will bring the same dimly lit, jazz- infused atmosphere that’s synonymous with the Eau-de-Vie brand, including intimate booths, the signature Whisky Room, an enormous back bar, and private whisky lockers to be pre-sold at the end of 2022,” said Almenning.

“The Speakeasy Group’s unique bar and restaurant offering will bring an excellent addition to our food and beverage mix at Brookfield Place Sydney and will contribute significantly to activating the precinct’s nightlife,” said Danny Poljak, Executive Vice President and Co-Head for Brookfield Properties Australia.

Drawing inspiration from the beautiful heritage surroundings, The Sanderson is set to be an energetic and dynamic steak and oyster restaurant specialising in quality Australian meat, local oysters, world-class cocktails and a highly- curated wine offering. The Sanderson is conceptualised as a destination to bring loved ones together to celebrate milestones and is named after Greg Sanderson as a symbol of family, friendship and celebration.

Both fit outs are being designed by Speakeasy Group’s long-time collaborators Studio Y, responsible for Nick &

Nora’s, Boilermaker House, Mjølner Melbourne and more recently Pearl Diver Cocktails & Oysters.

The arrival at Brookfield Place rounds out the day and nighttime F&B offers at the precinct, which also includes the Menzies Bar, Clocktower Bar, and Shell House Rooftop Terrace and Dining, by The Point.

The Speakeasy Group has committed to lease 618 square metres of space at Beneficial House on a 10-year term with plans to open its new concept in early 2023.

Both Speakeasy Group venues at Beneficial House will be accessed via the same speakeasy-style entrance on Wynyard Lane, opposite Shell House.

Brookfield Place Sydney is owned by interests associated with Brookfield, AMP Capital Wholesale Office Fund, UniSuper and other investors managed by AMP Capital.
