Newcastle Waterfront Apartments set to Commence

23 March 2021

A Newcastle waterfront project looks set to commence following settlement this week of 45 Honeysuckle Drive with the Hunter & Central Coast Development Corporation.

Local developer, Miller Property Corporation exchanged contracts to acquire the site in December 2018 with settlement conditional upon obtaining a planning approval for residential apartments on the site.

The site is located on a generous 5,600m2 site on Newcastle Harbour’s waterfront edge at a critical junction between three major open space networks: the Honeysuckle harbour-front passing east to west, a new public square at the termination to Steel Street and a new public park adjoining the Cottage Creek Corridor.

The site is within easy reach of the Newcastle light rail and will also form part of a future waterfront promenade that will link the Marina through to Merewether Beach.

The project, to be referred to as Horizon Apartments, was designed by leading firms Hill Thalis Architecture & Urban Projects and CKDS Architecture and a Development Application was lodged in August 2019. Despite being designated as a State Significant Application, ongoing design modifications and authority requests (including in relation to mine subsidence) delayed a final decision until June 2020. Miller paid $17.5m for 5,709sqm property.

The project will provide for three buildings of 8 and 9 storeys containing 110 apartments and four retail and commercial tenancies. A basement car park will provide parking for 183 cars.

The overall breakdown of the apartments includes 14 x 1 bedroom apartments, 51 x 2 bedroom apartments, 39 x 3 bedroom apartment, many with studies and 6 large penthouse apartments which are all 3 bed plus study.

Construction is expected to commence later in 2021.
