Scape Kensington is redefining student life for a new generation. As an architectural statement by Plus Studio, the new development connects people, place and purpose in Randwick in Sydney’s east. The newly completed 19-storey building transforms a former pharmacy site into a connected mix of student housing, retail, commercial and civic space within the revitalised Todman Square.

Located within Sydney’s Kensington to Kingsford (KEKI) precinct, the project directly connects to the new light rail and the University of New South Wales. As one of five Scape by The Living Company projects shaping this corridor, Scape Kensington contributes to a walkable, mixed-use neighbourhood where public space, learning and community intersect.

Plus Studio Director Rido Pin commented that “From the outset, we wanted to activate every edge of the site. The building bridges public and private realms – with every element of the design connecting people to each other and the city. More than a place to live, it contributes to the civic life of the neighbourhood activating streets, laneways and a plaza – a building that feels open, connected and purposeful.”

The architecture balances sculptural form with crafted detail. A brick podium grounds the building, framing retail and communal areas that extend into a new public plaza and connect to the exciting context of Randwick. Above, a scalloped tower introduces a refined vertical rhythm, while a green spine carries landscape from the street to the rooftop gardens – a gesture that connects architecture and environment together allowing unique vistas to the adjacent Randwick Racecourse, City and Botany Bay.

At ground level, the building opens generously to its surroundings. A multi-use Council community hall and a network of laneways encourage everyday gathering and activity for the community. A new public artwork, Totemic by Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie, anchors the plaza and brings First Nations perspectives into the heart of the precinct.

Inside, 308 student apartments have a mix of studios and two-bedroom layouts. The interiors capture the vitality of student living. Fostering opportunities for both calm and connection, the building includes shared kitchens, study havens and rooftop spaces designed for comfort, collaboration and retreat. Every floor reflects a focus on wellbeing and a sense of belonging.

Commenting on the project, Scape CEO, Anouk Darling said, “As the KEKI precinct continues to grow, Scape Kensington has been guided by a human-centred approach, creating purposeful spaces that foster belonging and bring residents together as they grow, learn and find their place in the city.”

Building on the student experience, enhanced environmental performance is also a foundational part of the design. A fully electric building, the project achieves a 6 Star Green Star Design and As Built v1.3 certification – integrating natural ventilation, biophilic principles and energy-efficient systems – which all contribute to creating a more liveable and sustainable space.

Constructed by Infinity Constructions, Scape Kensington is Plus Studio’s fourth completed project with Scape, Australia’s largest provider of student accommodation.
