Woolworths Sales Surge

Woolworths have reported total sales for Q1 of $17.9bn up 12.3% with eCommerce sales up 87% to $1.5bn. as customers consumed more at home during the COVID19 pandemic.

Brad Banducci, CEO, Woolworths Group said, “It has been a pleasing start to F21 with all retail businesses delivering strong sales growth and customer metrics remaining solid.”

Australian Food total sales increased by 12.9% however New Zealand Food sales growth moderated over the quarter due to easing COVID restrictions and lower market growth rates with total sales growth of 6.9% in Q1.

Surprisingly, despite 22 BIG W stores in Victoria being closed to in-store customers, BIG W’s total sales increased by 20.4% with Leisure and Toys reported to be the standout category in that business. BIG W stores reopened on 28 October.

Sales in Endeavour Drinks’ sales remained very strong (+21.4%)through the quarter with Dan Murphy’s and eCommerce sales the highlights. Hotel trading continued to be impacted by the closures in Victoria with total sales declining by 33.2%. 85 ALH venues were closed in Victoria during the quarter with all ALH venues scheduled reopen on 9 November.

Brad Banducci said, “for the rest of the calendar year, we expect elevated sales and costs to continue as customers spend more time at home and continue to embrace eCommerce”.
