The new Sydney Fish Market has reached a major milestone with Multiplex installing the roof’s last timber beam, marking the ‘topping out’ of the iconic building.
With its wave-like roof design, the new Sydney Fish Market will forever change the heart of the city and create a new world-class tourist destination, just as the Opera House did when it was built.
In an engineering feat, the roof structure comprises about 600 glue-laminated timber beams, reaching up to 32 meters long and weighing over 7 tonnes. Once complete, the roof will be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
“We’re delighted to have reached this critical milestone on this world-class project.
The roof is an iconic design element of the new Sydney Fish Market, requiring extensive planning and collaboration over numerous years, and we are thrilled to see it come to life,” said Daniel Murphy, Regional Director – NSW at Multiplex.
Building the new Sydney Fish Market has been guided by sustainability, with the roof beams and cassettes stored and assembled on nearby Glebe Island and delivered to site by barge, replacing what would otherwise equate to around 5,660 truck movements.
Sustainability will continue into operation with the roof design enabling natural lighting of the facility, to reduce energy consumption; allow rainwater to be collected for recycling and irrigation; and will allow sun to be absorbed in solar panels to contribute to the building’s daily energy needs.
With this innovative and unique design, the new Sydney Fish Market will achieve a 5 Star Green Star rating, marking a significant step in achieving the NSW Government’s net zero commitment by 2050.
The new Sydney Fish Market, will stand as a landmark destination, enhancing Sydney’s waterfront and providing state-of-the-art facilities for seafood lovers, tourists, and the local community.
The modern market hall will host a wide variety of seafood vendors, while new and expanded dining options, including waterfront restaurants and cafes, will be available alongside retail spaces for local businesses offering an unparalleled visitor experience.
The project delivered by construction partner Multiplex, is key to the transformation of the Blackwattle Bay urban renewal, returning the foreshore to the public, creating new public domain, and improving pedestrian and cycling links for all visitors.
The new Sydney Fish Market will be the biggest in the Southern hemisphere, supporting fishers and coastal fishing towns all along the NSW coast.
