New data* shows nearly half of all new spending on residential building is going towards renovations and rebuilds rather than construction of new homes, in particular in the inner city, north shore and eastern suburbs.
Award-winning architect James Alexander-Hatziplis, co-founder and CEO of architects PLACE Studio, suggests the areas that people start improving first are those more expensive renovations such as kitchens and bathrooms, rather than applying fresh coat of paint to the property – which they may have already done themselves.
“Traditionally, good kitchens sell homes.”
He suggests The Block fans and other home improvers should start planning now, get good designs and any local council approvals.
“Good design maximises space – be it in an apartment or stand-alone house. Natural light flow around a kitchen and in bathrooms is key. Along with quality fixtures, these can help bring a room to life.”
PLACE Studio is an award-winning architectural and design practice founded by Mr Alexander-Hatziplis and his wife, COO, Marie-Claire Alexander- Hatziplis, whom he met while they were studying at university. They have two children and know first-hand the importance of space and appreciate the value that good design can add to a home.
