Cult bakery next to open as Poetica added to 1 Denison’s food lineup
10 October 2023North Sydney has become the latest foodie hotspot, with 1 Denison’s dining precinct at the epicentre of its growing food scene and activating the CBD beyond the traditional 9 to 5 workday. From BarLume, a day-to-night destination by Adam Choker, to hearty Asian fusion dishes on demand, there is something for everyone.
Towering 158 metres above street level, 1 Denison sits at the heart of North Sydney. The 37-level office building is fully leased and home to several high-profile corporate tenants, including Nine, Microsoft and SAP. The tower, which is managed and operated by CBRE, sees thousands of office workers enter its doors each day. While many stay after-hours to enjoy the building’s art exhibitions and events, panoramic city views, and sought-after hospitality hotspots, 1 Denison also attracts the neighbouring corporate crowd.
Poetica is the latest addition to 1 Denison, an open-air 120-seat restaurant and bar with a custom wood-burning hearth and an impressive 450-bottle wine list. Poetica’s creative menu and stunning interior makes it a perfect excuse to entertain clients or just enjoy a decadent dinner – but for those who prefer a more laid-back approach to hospitality, 1 Denison is also buzzing with all-day dining options and takeaway spots that are perfect for a mid-week feed.
“While the CBD has long been a hotspot for corporate bookings, many Northsiders are choosing to dine and entertain on this side of the bridge, which has a growing array of superb places to eat, drink and play,” said Stuart Vaughan, COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Winten Property Group.
“North Sydney will benefit greatly from the new Victoria Cross Metro Station – which will increase connectivity and also bring more people into the suburb, where they can discover its growing network of laneways, and exciting range of new food and beverage venues.”
Well-known pastry chain Bourke Street Bakery is set to open its doors in the next few weeks. Growing from humble beginnings in Surry Hills, the cult bakery has expanded to include 11 locations across Sydney and even opened a flagship store in New York City. Selling a range of treats and staples, from gourmet sausage rolls to cakes and freshly baked sourdough, this trendy bakery café is a crowd favourite and a highly anticipated addition to 1 Denison.
Located in the 1 Denison lobby, BarLume does it all – from early-morning breakfast fare to lunch with a side of cheeky cocktails. BarLume’s casual dining concept is the brainchild of Adam Choker, featuring interiors by sister Caroline Choker, Director of multidisciplinary design firm ACME.
BarLume’s all-day offerings are delivered with a striking interior to boot, making it a popular destination for mid-week coffee catchups, work lunches and Friday drinks. Choker has led a string of successful hospitality ventures, including Happy as Larry and Flower Child Cafe, making BarLume a must-visit.
The building’s buzzing public forecourt also provides access to numerous dining and takeaway options on the Ground Floor. Its unbeatable selection of healthy takeaway spots, coffee options and dine-in destinations have made it a one-stop lunch location for all the corporate businesses and locals in the area.
The Ground Floor is home to the Korean Japanese fusion hub Missing Spoon, a popular port of call for lovers of KFC (Korean Fried Chicken). Offerings of fries, dumplings and crispy chicken are balanced by an array of poké bowls and acai smoothies, all made daily.
Neighbouring cult juice brand, Cali Press, provides hearty and nourishing health food bowls alongside its range of freshly pressed juices and smoothies, while Well Foods Kitchen sells wholesome lunch staples like salads, wraps and sandwiches for those needing a quick and nutritious meal on the go. Lovers of Thai cuisine can visit SixNature Thai for their noodle fix, and those who prefer to hold their lunch between two hands will love Stacked, which offers fully loaded fresh artisan sandwiches with fast counter service.
Lumos provides the office crowd with their daily caffeine hit along with an irresistible selection of classic pastries from an ultra-convenient outdoor location. BarLume, Missing Spoon, Cali Press & Lumos all offer corporate catering services, delivering fuss-free eats for work events and presentations.
City-siders will soon have a five-minute journey to North Sydney via the upcoming Victoria Cross Metro Station, which is conveniently located on the other side of Denison Street.
“With the Metro Station set to open next year, patrons can move between the city and North Sydney within minutes, making it easier to venture North and get a taste of the food scene here,” said 1 Denison’s General Manager, Nathan Chehab.
The lobby of 1 Denison, besides providing access to the building’s unbeatable food retailers, also makes an ideal stop for those wanting to peruse the building’s rotating art exhibitions. Ranging from historic archives to modern art prizes – and recently the work of Susan Rothwell – 1 Denison features new works four times a year, with some pieces available to purchase.
If you want to check out North Sydney’s new flavours but are not part of the office crowd, you will not miss out. All the building’s venues offer delivery through Menulog and Uber Eats, so you can enjoy the best of the suburb’s growing dining scene from the comfort of your couch.
