MR Roads: The New Multimillion Dollar Aussie Asphalt Plant Turning Waste Into World-Class Roads
25 June 2025
Award-winning entrepreneurs Daniel Mikus and James Rolph, the powerhouse duo behind MR Roads, Australia’s fastest-growing roads infrastructure company, have announced a game-changing $20 million investment into recycled bitumen technology and asphalt production.
The new manufacturing site, located in Maryborough, Queensland, will operate under the brand name MR Roads, and provide asphalt products to projects within a 200-kilometre radius. The plant is set to become one of the country’s most advanced recycled asphalt facilities.
Designed to service major infrastructure projects across the region, the plant will produce asphalt comprised of up to 30 percent recycled bitumen, also known as recycled asphalt product (RAP).
“We’ve built our reputation on quality and innovation and now we’re taking that to the next level by committing to more sustainable materials,” Mikus said.
“Our new plant is not just about roads, it’s about future-proofing the infrastructure sector in Queensland and beyond.
“Increasingly government and other major project owners are looking for infrastructure solutions that demonstrate the highest levels of sustainability and innovation, in addition to cost and endurance attributes.
“We will be able to set new standards for this across industry once the plant goes live.”
Recycled bitumen is produced by crushing and repurposing old asphalt, which is then blended with fresh materials to create a durable, high-performance mix for new road construction. This circular process dramatically reduces landfill waste, lowers the reliance on virgin resources and cuts carbon emissions.
“Recycled asphalt performs just as well as traditional materials, but it’s better for the environment and better for business,” Rolph said.
“It’s a smart, scalable solution to one of the biggest waste streams in civil construction.”
The new asphalt plant forms part of Mikus and Rolph’s long-term expansion strategy and marks their move into complementary business activities that support their mission to drive technological advancement, improve sustainability and deliver more efficient, durable infrastructure across Australia’s roads sector.
The Maryborough facility also positions Queensland as a leading hub for circular construction and is expected to generate local employment, while accelerating the state’s shift toward environmentally responsible infrastructure delivery.
“With current staffing levels at just under 100 across the MR Roads ecosystem, we anticipate that this number will increase to over 150 once the asphalt plant goes live,” Mikus added.
“We are extremely proud to be building an iconic Australian brand and to be a leading employer in the roads infrastructure sector.”
