The first Angelika Film Centre outside the USA is due to premiere at the $750 million South/City/SQ, with the 8-screen, 400-seat state-of-the-art cinema set to showcase the world’s best arthouse, independent and international films, in addition to the more specialised movies from the major Hollywood studios.
The two-storey venue will span 2,500sqm and boasts an elevated alfresco bar area that overlooks The Square at South/City/SQ. This stylish bar is inspired by the cinema’s first location in Soho, New York and will offer an array of classic cocktails to be enjoyed before or after films.
Movie-goers will enjoy the quintessential snack bar options including a lolly station and popcorn, while a luxury in-theatre service will elevate the experience with light food and beverage options served during a screening.
The original Angelika Film Center opened in Soho in September 1989 and has since expanded to nine locations across the USA.
Angelika represents the latest string to South/City/SQ’s bow, which now has over 12,000sqm of retail, a variety of lifestyle, luxury and wellness brands, a bustling hospitality scene encompassing various cuisines and operators, a full-line Woolworths, BWS, and circa 5,000sqm of open green space – including crowd-favourite community space The Square, which hosts regular markets, events and pop-ups.
Popular hospitality venues Purple Palm, Sasso Italiano, South City Wine and Casa Chow opened their doors in late-2022 at South/City/SQ, adding to the likes of Pelci Clinic, Club Vitality and Emporium Barber.
South/City/SQ’s intrinsic focus on delivering entertainment and hospitality has culminated in a popular precinct that consistently draws local, domestic and international crowds, says Pellicano managing director Nando Pellicano.
“The addition of the Angelika to the South/City/SQ precinct adds another drawcard for existing residents, as well as for domestic and international tourists. Our aim is to create a lifestyle-focused precinct that appeals to a diverse audience.
“The opening of the Angelika will be a further boost to the already bustling entertainment scene of Woolloongabba – we are looking forward to watching the area continue to evolve as we approach the 2032 Olympics,” he said.
“We are very excited to launch our first International Angelika Film Centre location in the heart of the amazing South/City/SQ precinct. The Angelika at South/City/SQ will deliver a diverse slate of films, in a world class cinema environment. With plush recliner seats in every screen, the very latest in digital projection and sound, along with our fantastic Highline Terrace Bar and Soho Lounge auditoriums – Woolloongabba is set to be the place to see a movie in Brisbane.” said Mark Douglas, Managing Director of the Reading Cinemas Group for Australia and New Zealand.
South/City/SQ, developed in partnership with Perri Projects, is a 2.1ha masterplanned precinct delivered over 8 stages. Stanley House, the first build-to-rent stage of the project, alongside the retail component are now complete, with Hillyard House – which will add another 152 build-to-rent apartments – and commercial office stages soon to follow.
Alongside its in-person offering, the Angelika operates streaming service Angelika Anywhere – which allows subscribers to access its selection of arthouse and independent films.
The cinema, which will sit within the Reading Cinema group, is due to open in mid-2023.
