The tallest point of the $330 million Eurobodalla Regional Hospital has been reached, with global contractor Multiplex ‘Topping Out’ the four-level structure.
Located on the Princes Highway in south-east Moruya, it is one of the largest new hospital developments on the NSW South Coast. The new hospital is set to transform healthcare access for communities in the Eurobodalla region.
A Topping Out ceremony was held onsite to mark the milestone, attended by the Premier of New South Wales the Hon. Chris Minns MP, New South Wales Minister for Health the Hon. Ryan Park MP, and Member for Bega the Hon. Dr Michael Holland.
The Eurobodalla Regional Hospital will deliver a new Emergency Department and eight-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – the region’s first intensive care service. It will deliver new surgical and operating theatres as well as an expanded medical imaging department with additional x-ray and an MRI.
Further to this, the new hospital will increase ambulatory care for community outpatient services, deliver short-stay mental health beds, and provide new paediatric and maternity services. The training of health staff will also be supported through new educational facilities, including a simulation laboratory.
“We’re proud to reach this critical milestone on this world-class health facility, which sets an enviable new benchmark for regional healthcare. Importantly, Eurobodalla Regional Hospital has unlocked significant local employment opportunities and will support the growing Eurobodalla Shire community for years to come,” said David Ghannoum, Multiplex Regional Managing Director for NSW and the ACT.
During construction, the Eurobodalla Regional Hospital project has around 200 workers on site each day, with the potential to support hundreds of indirect jobs over the life of the project. Delivering a significant boost to local employment, over 40% of its construction workforce are from the Eurobodalla region.
Some 11,500 square metres of concrete has been poured during construction to date, enough to fill 200 backyard swimming pools. The volume of steel reinforcement used could build 1,200 cars, while 175,000 metres of post-tensioning cable have been used, the same as the distance between Moruya and Canberra.
An Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement with Health Infrastructure to develop the hospital’s design saw Multiplex collaborate with clinicians, staff and community members.
Eurobodalla Regional Hospital is also a pilot for the Connecting with Country design framework, with Multiplex undertaking detailed consultation with Health Infrastructure and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members to inform the design for the hospital’s landscaping, front entry, meeting places, interiors, façade, healing places, outdoor care areas and artworks.
Its new maternity department will support mothers by delivering birthing suites with baths and private outdoor spaces on Yuin Country, along with a special care nursery, feeding areas and a family lounge.
The new hospital is being delivered by Health Infrastructure on behalf of the NSW Government. Construction is scheduled to complete in 2027.
Multiplex has strong credentials delivering hospitals and healthcare facilities across Australia, currently completing more than $3.8 billion in health projects nationally. These include the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct (JHHIP) in NSW’s Hunter Region and the new Footscray Hospital in Victoria.
