Lendlease to power Victoria Cross Tower renewables

1 December 2021

Lendlease today announced that its new 42-storey commercial building Victoria Cross Tower, a Sydney Metro integrated station development, will be powered 100 per cent by renewables, as the company launched its decarbonisation roadmap.

The electrification of the building – being developed and built by Lendlease and to be managed by Lendlease Investment Management upon completion – is an example of the actions being taken to achieve absolute zero carbon for scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2040.

The design of Victoria Cross Tower, located above the southern entrance to Sydney Metro’s new Victoria Cross Station, allows for the building’s heating, cooling and domestic hot water plant to be fully electric, thereby eliminating the building’s future reliance on fossil fuels.

The electrification initiative will help to deliver a market leading asset upon completion and has received positive feedback from discussions with prospective tenants.

Designed to be North Sydney’s most connected and sustainable workplace, Victoria Cross Tower will promote flexibility, innovation and collaboration. An expansive lobby with multipurpose hub space will facilitate community connection, while outdoor balconies and green or ‘biophilic’ spaces will promote health and wellbeing.

Victoria Cross Tower is 25 per cent owned by APPF Commercial and it will be the first building owned by the fund that is fully electric.

Lendlease’s Mission Zero Roadmap details the actions it will take to achieve its sustainability ambitions in Australia – through eliminating gas and diesel from designs and existing assets; switching to 100 per cent renewable electricity; and partnering with suppliers and industry to eliminate embodied carbon in materials such as steel, aluminium and cement.

Lendlease has elected to tackle all three emission scopes in its targets and roadmap in recognition of the significant impact embodied carbon in materials have on global warming. While outside Lendlease’s direct control, scope 3 emissions of this nature present the sector’s greatest transformation imperative.

In line with the roadmap, all Lendlease developments are set to follow the Victoria Cross Tower decarbonisation commitments as essential actions to live up to the promise to be a 1.5 degree aligned company.

Dale Connor, CEO Lendlease Australia said, “In line with our commitment to becoming a 1.5 degree aligned company, our Mission Zero Roadmap spans our integrated business in development, construction and investments.

“Setting bold targets in 2020 was the first important step; outlining a clear plan and acting on it is essential to authentically decarbonise our business.”
